Dee found herself standing on a path inside the woods. From somewhere not far came the sounds of sloshing water and the calls of the little creatures that made their house in muddy ponds. All around her were only dark trees.

Dee remembered being near a building before. A wooden cabin. She felt dizzy, like when she had a vision, but it had to be something else. Visions always brought vivid images. Her memory was foggy instead. She couldn’t even remember how she had ended up in the forest in the middle of the night.

Clouds moved and the night sky turned darker. Dee hugged herself. Where was Yarrow? She remembered that Iir was late, but Yarrow was with her, although she couldn’t remember when she had seen her last.

It was too cold to stand still. Dee started down the path. Maybe she would see something familiar that would help her remember what had happened. After a while, she spotted a milestone and a boy sitting on it, which was strange, since it was night. But it wasn’t a boy. It was the ghost of a boy more or less her age, with short black hair and sad brown eyes.

“Hi,” Dee said with a thin voice. The ghost didn’t seem to be scary or carry negative energy, but Dee didn’t have much experience with his kind and didn’t know what to expect.

The ghost waved. “Hi.”

“Do you know where we are?”

“The Forest of Summerwood.”

The name was familiar in a vague way. Someone had said something about that forest. Not to go east.

“Is there a village here?” Dee asked. “Can you tell me how to get out of the forest?”

The ghost shook his head. “It’s too late. Even if you follow this path, you will always end up where you started.”

“Witchcraft,” Dee whispered. That was the reason she wasn’t supposed to go east. Bad witches lived in that part of the forest. But maybe, even if these witches were supposed to be evil, she could talk to them, find out if they wanted something that Dee could offer them in exchange for the freedom to leave the haunted woods. Her mother was a witch. They may be willing to talk to her.

Mist rose from the wet bed of the woods. The boy pointed east. “There’s a home down there. Maybe they’ll let you in.”

Dee nodded. “Thank you.”

“I went in some time ago,” the boy continued. “I don’t remember when I came out.”

“Right,” Dee said, losing hope.

The ghost became more ethereal. “Maybe I’ll see you again.”

Dee wished that Yarrow was there. She was the expert in witchcraft. But, this time, her sisters were not there to help. She resumed walking along the path, going in the opposite direction to that shown to her by the ghost, away from where the witches’ house was supposed to be. She was sure she never turned around, but the ghost was right about the hex, because after a while, the same milestone appeared in the mist.

The night was cold and Dee hugged herself, shivering.
